drumFunny Turns 1!

drumFunny is ONE YEAR OLD. Happy Birthday drumFunny!

I remember starting this blog that my goal was to “survive” for three months. And here we are, one year, 369 posts, and hundreds of thousands of views later.

For anyone that has or is operating a blog, you know how much work it is on a day to day basis to keep updates coming. There’s no way I would have kept this up if it wasn’t for the community that has grown around the site. Because the content comes from our viewers and fans, I have you to thank for helping make this site a success.

Keep submitting, keep commenting, keep spreading/linking our content and we should have a healthy and happy 2010.

Good luck to all those in the middle of tryouts and have a freaking’ awesome Holiday!

Banished Beyond mp3’s Now Downloadable

We’re continually updating the Banished Beyond Lion King post. Most recently I made the mp3’s downloadable through a zip file. All files are included in the zip except for the full mix. Because Zimmer’s King of Pride is copyrighted through Buena Vista, I don’t want to risk making it free for download. If you’re hell bent on having it though, shoot me an email.

Rudiments and Licks

We’re on the lookout for more music related submissions. Rudiments, licks, Lion King style arrangements, whatever. Our music posts are something that sets us apart from other music themed blogs. To keep things on the humorous side, try naming your lick or rudiment using a pop culture reference – for example our Christmas Eve post: Stocking Stuffers. Other ideas might be, “The Stimulus Package,” “Korean Rocket,” “Easter Eggs” etc.

Show us what you got!

Gotcha

We have not sold out to Premier. This was nothing but a little April Fools fun.

We are still, and always hope to be, our own entity. At least until someone makes a legitimate offer

Just kidding…..but seriously.

This April Fool’s gag received a much bigger reaction than we were expecting. Thank you to everyone who wished us a sincere ‘congratulations.’ Only then did I feel a little bad. Other than that, we got a huge kick out of the calls, text messages, emails, yada yada yada, sent throughout the day. Some angry, some sad, and everything else in between.

If you were surprised no one was catching on in the comments, it’s because we hid all the comments mentioning April Fools. I hope to never censor comments in the future, but it was necessary for the survival of the joke. Just to see how many people actually did figure out what was going on, I re-approved every censored comment. Check it out.

Of all the reactions we received, this was my personal favorite:

Sorry to anyone we may have offended (we’re not really sorry). To Premier Percussion, please don’t sue us for using your logo without permission and contrary to jerrrrrrrk’s opinion, we don’t think your drums are that bad.

Ok, enough of the jibba jabba. Back to the drum funny!

Acquisition by Premier

We’re very excited to announce the acquisition of drumFunny by Premier Marching Percussion! (this explains the new site design and web address redirect) If you are having trouble viewing the new design, try refreshing your browser or re-entering the URL.

[Update] The domain redirect will occur Sunday, April 5th, NOT today. At that point, drumFunny.com will automatically be redirected to premier-percussion.com/premier-drum-blog. RSS subscribers will automatically have their feeds changed to the new URL. Until then, the site address will remain as you see it above.

Jim Thomas, director of marketing at Premier percussion, was the mastermind behind the acquisition.

“I’ve been a fan of [drumfunny] from the beginning. When Premier decided to pursue a more aggressive initiative towards the online space, we wanted to try something different. Drumfunny has already developed a very strong viewership and community and their market closely mirrors that of Premier Percussion. We hope to slowly transition away from exclusively humor related content and use this platform as a way to promote exciting new Premier products and events. We’d also like to personally thank Chris for his assistance and willingness in the acquisition of the site.”

It’s been a lot of fun and I thank everyone for their continued support, loyalty, comments, and content submissions. While I had bigger and better plans for drumFunny as we moved into the future, it would have been foolish to turn down the very generous offer made to us by Premier.

[Update] I’ve received several emails asking if I will still maintain my editorial position. The answer is NO. Premier is assuming all maintenance and content responsibilities for the site effective immediately.

If you are traveling to Dayton Ohio for WGI percussion finals, be sure to stop by the Premier booth. I believe they will have some drumFunny merchandise to give away.

Thanks again guys. Hope you see you down the road at some point.

Banished Beyond T-Shirt

Our good pal Banished Beyond needs help paying his tour fees for the 2009 season. Apparently, he managed to slip through auditions without being [cut].

“As most of you have probably guessed, the guys behind Banished Beyond do march drum corps in the summer. Unfortunately, drum corps is becoming more expensive every year, and marching a few seasons has already taken a big chunk out of our wallets. That being said, we could really use some help with tour fees. Rather than just asking for donations, I thought I would put up a store where we can get a few dollars for every item people buy, so donors will get something out of it. One of us will be aging out this year, so every purchase helps to put us out on the field. Obviously I’d rather not say where we have/will be marching, but thanks for any donation.”

Hey guys ~

First, thanks for all the submissions and positive emails you guys have been sending in. It’s nice to know everyone is enjoying the site.

drumFunny is growing very quickly. The more people who find the site, the more submissions we get. The more submissions we get, the better content we can post. So here’s the deal. When there’s a post you really like, be sure to click on some of the social bookmark links below; especially the Facebook one. This is one of the best ways you can get the word out and share drumFunny site with your friends. If you have a digg account, digg the posts you like. If you’re really web 2.0-y, use del.icio.us and technorati. The more we can spread the word, the better content we’ll have to post.

We’re always open to any feedback you guys have for improving the site. If you have an idea for a video/rudiment/lick/whatever but don’t have the time, let us know and we may be able to make it happen. If there’s a new feature you’d like to see on the site (i.e. forum, merchandise, live video feed of puppies sleeping, etc.) post a comment and get some discussion going.
