Purpose: To attain the ability and status of a highly skilled musician in the drum corps world, and to build a solid musical foundation to better the experience of rejoicing animals.

Notes: Simba worked long and hard to become King of Pride Rock.  This is symbolic to you, the player.  He did not come unprepared when he faced Scar.  All of the shame and anger that Simba built up inside of him were kept bottled up for years until that fateful day, when Scar revealed the true murderer of Mufasa. Since Simba was prepared, he knew exactly what to do.  He caused Scar to fall down to his own minions, which ultimately led to his demise…

You can relate this situation when playing this piece by showing the listener who’s boss.  Take this piece and hold it close to your heart, and let the smorgasbord of notes sink in.  Now it is time to face the music. I have carefully placed reminders throughout the passage.  Please emulate the feelings expressed.  This will set you up for success when the time comes to execute.  By doing so, the full potential of the music is reached. Thanks to Simba (you), the Circle of Life continues.

Snare Only (184)

Snare (172)

Snare (160)

Tenor (184)

Tenor (172)

Tenor (160)

Download the practice mp3’s – I can’t include the full mix as it’s copyrighted through Buena Vista. If you really insist on having it, shoot me an email.

  • @futuretenor – Done! :)

Comment by Chris Leone — April 8, 2009
  • Not trying to be rude but don’t you think measure 11 is somewhat ridiculous, I don’t think those scrapes make any sense, not trying to be critical just saying is all

    Comment by futuretenorplayer(hopefully) — April 8, 2009
  • @futuretenor – I’d take it up with Banished :)

Comment by Chris Leone — April 8, 2009

  • I love the notes on there.. Spine Ripping! Soul Reaping! With supreme animosity! Ruthless!

    Comment by David — April 22, 2009
  • i find these bass parts to be way to hard to be a cadets parody, now if they were all 8th based this would be more accurate

Comment by Nick Cannon — April 25, 2009
  • kyle, the scrapes are not impossible on measure eleven. to play them, you have to learn how to play quads first.
i took a look at them. and they arent too difficult. at all.

    Comment by DrummTrip44 — May 3, 2009
  • no bass mp3?!

    Comment by sammy — May 9, 2009
  • So here’s my question. Where does the background music come from? Is that off of the Lion King soundtrack or something? Maybe the broadway show?

    Comment by Zack — May 9, 2009
  • @Zack – the song is King of Pride rock. You can DL it from the iTunes store: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=156089566&id=156089366&s=143441

    Comment by Tim — June 1, 2009
  • Hey man, i know this probably wouldn’t be helpful to one soul person but could you leave the Bass part at the three tempos for an mp3? THANKS!

    Comment by Christian — June 7, 2009
  • i agree that the scrapes in measure 11 are challenging… but if you break it down to like half time and work your way up(like you would with any hard section of music) its really not that hard at all… in fact…. measure 12 is more technically difficult to play well up to tempo…

Comment by kyle ballard — June 9, 2009
  • This is awesome. Ive now put the mp3’s on my ipod to listen to them. Thanks Banished.

    Comment by Jbrinkler — June 18, 2009
  • yes i would agree that measure 12 is the hardest measure for tenors; took me about 40 mins to work up tempo for measure 11.

    Comment by Tim — June 20, 2009
  • I’m having trouble getting the full supreme animosity out of my playing…any pointers?

    Comment by Drbeat_nick — June 21, 2009

  • You should put the unison bass part and all of the individual parts if you can up.

    Comment by Jeremy — July 6, 2009
  • what show/year is this transcribed from?

    Comment by Brad — July 8, 2009
  • @Brad – This isn’t transcribed from an actual Cadets show. Banished just wrote some “Cadet-ish” beats over top of Lion King

  • There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up.I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith.I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Both boys and girls feel the impact of just a moment’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.
